The Charltons and the Milburns

Jack and Bobby Charlton's mother was born Elizabeth Milburn. Four of her brothers were professional footballers. John (Jack) played for Leeds United and Bradford City; George played for Leeds United and Chesterfield; James (Jimmy) played for Leeds United and Bradford City, and Stanley (Stan) played for Chesterfield, Leicester City and Rochdale.

The most famous footballing Milburn of all, however, was John Edward Thompson Milburn – known as Jackie. He played 353 League games for Newcastle United between 1943 and 1957, and scored ten goals in his thirteen games for England. He was affectionately known as "Wor Jackie" to the adoring Geordie fans.

Jackie Milburn was the first cousin of Jack, George, Jimmy, Stan and Elizabeth; their fathers were brothers. So Jackie was the Charlton brothers' first cousin once removed.
